What are the 7 Marks of a Good Mentor?

Timothy, my son, I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well, holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith.”

 1 Timothy 1:18-19 NIV

 Screen Shot 2017-04-03 at 11.20.29 AMIn 1 Timothy 1, we get a glimpse of the relationship between Apostle Paul and Timothy. Paul calls Timothy son. Now, Timothy was not the biological son of Paul, but Paul saw him as a son. And, Timothy saw Paul as a father and more importantly spiritual mentor. What is a mentor (spiritual mentor)?  “A mentor is someone who passes truths on to his [her] student. In this rushed century we are inclined to forget this. We need a mentor’s help with our reading, thinking, and our work. We need someone to help us see the bigger picture. Someone, who through his [her] experience will pass knowledge and wisdom on to his learners in a way they will understand. Like Jesus taught His disciples.” (Solly Ozrovech, A Season of Hope, p. March 24)  Do you have anyone like this in your life? If so, what made you reach out to this person? What made you believe this person could mentor you? I believe that a good mentor is set apart by a certain set of traits/qualities:

A good mentor is:

An Example   

When looking for a mentor, you will want to find someone that you aspire to be like. Their life should be filled with spiritual fruit. Matthew 7:16 NIV says, “By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?” Is this someone, who is strong and mature in their faith? “Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith.” – Hebrews 13:7 NASB  

Wise 

A good mentor will have plenty of wisdom, knowledge, and experienced advice to offer you. Proverbs 13:20 NIV says, “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” However, as a mentee, you must be willing to accept not only your mentor’s advice, but their rebukes.  “… rebuke the wise and they will love you.Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.” -Proverbs 9:8-9 NIV “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.” – Proverbs 12:15 NIV

Trustworthy

When seeking out a mentor, you should look for someone you know that you can trust. 1 Corinthians 4:2 NIV says “Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.” Is this a person you can trust?

An Overcomer

A good mentor is someone, who has experienced failure. They have made mistakes and have regrets. This is a person who has fallen down, but has gotten up stronger. Micah 7:8 NIV says, “… Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the Lord will be my light.” This person will tell you where the pitfalls are on your path. “Who will hear these lessons from the past and see the ruin that awaits you in the future?” -Isaiah 42:23 NLT As a mentee, you must be completely open to and willing to learn from failures of your mentor.

A Visionary

A good mentor is a visionary. This person has the ability to see your potential. This person can see beyond the surface. In 1 Timothy 1:18 NIV, Paul reminds Timothy of the prophecies made about his future and encourages him to keep up the good work. In a similar way, a visionary sees all that you are capable of, believes in you, and encourages you to keep fighting.

A Challenger 

A good mentor will not only see your potential, but also see your weaknesses. They will help you identify your weak points and challenge you to overcome them. A mentor will not be afraid to tell you things the way they are.  “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” – Proverbs 27:17 NIV When two surfaces rub against each other, there is usually friction. As a mentee, you must be willing to face the challenges that your mentor presents to you. A good mentor will challenge you to become your best version of you.

A Nurturer (protector)

 A good mentor loves and thus nurtures their mentee. There is a certain selfless-ness about being a mentor. A good mentor always thinks about what is in the best interest of their mentee. This person will guide you in a gentle, but strong way as a mother would. Paul writes “As apostles of Christ we certainly had a right to make some demands of you, but instead we were like children among you. Or we were like a mother feeding and caring for her own children. We loved you so much that we shared with you not only God’s Good News but our own lives, too.” -1 Thessalonians 2:7-8 NLT A good mentor will protect you from making their past mistakes and encourage you to be better than them.

Dear Lord Jesus, please help us to be good mentors and mentees. Please help us to reflect your love in mentorship. Amen. 

Where Are You Looking?

In Lamentations 2, the prophet Jeremiah focuses on all of the problems and hardships, that Israel is going through. Specifically, in Lamentations 2:11, he writes that he has been crying so long, that his eyes are failing him. Sometimes, when we look around us, our lives seem like they are filled with problems. But, we can’t just focus on our problems or we will be miserable. We need to keep our focus on God’s goodness in our lives. We might have troubles coming in every direction, but if we look at our lives more closely, they are filled with little blessings. Maybe we take these little blessing for granted, because we are so focused on our problems? But, with God, our problems will melt away. Why should we be focusing all of our energies on these problems, when our God is so much bigger than our problems?

Dear Lord Jesus, please help us to keep our eyes focused on You and not our problems. Amen.

El Mejor GPS?

Y os restituiré los años que comió la oruga, el saltón, el revoltón y la langosta….

En Joel 2, los Israelitas fueron llamados a apartarse de sus caminos, y a volver a Dios. A veces, somos realmente duros sobre nosotros mismos después de escoger mal  o caer en errores. Sentimos que no merecemos ninguna cosa buena. Pero, Dios todavía está trabajando en nosotros y todavía nos ama. Cuando hacemos tantas malas decisiones, que terminamos en el lugar equivocado; Dios todavía está allí con nosotros para ayudarnos a encontrar el camino hacia donde debemos estar. Es como nuestro  GPS. Profundamente en la parte de atrás de nuestras mentes, Él nos está diciendo que encabezamos una cierta dirección. Y, cuando tomamos la dirección equivocada, Él nos rutea para que lleguemos al destino, que El quiere para nosotros. Sólo necesitamos escuchar a Dios y obedecer Sus instrucciones. Además, “cuando tomamos malas decisiones, es difícil creer que algo bueno pueda crecer en nuestras vidas otra vez” (Nortker, 3-Minute Devotionals For Women, p.322) Pero, Romanos 8:28 RVR 1960 dice: “Y sabemos que a los que aman a Dios, todas las cosas les ayudan a bien, esto es, a los que conforme a su propósito son llamados.” Note cómo dice “todas las cosas” y no algunas cosas. Todas las cosas significan no sólo nuestras buenas decisiones, sino también nuestras decisiones malas. Dios sabe todo. Isaías 46:10 RVR 1960 nos recuerda que, Dios sabe “… lo por venir desde el principio …” Esto significa que Él incluso sabe los errores que haremos en el futuro. Cuando cometemos estos errores, Dios todavía nos amará y tendrá planes para nuestras vidas. Dios es más grande que nuestros errores.

Will 2017 Be Your Best Year Yet?

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

 – 2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV

As we approach 2017, we may be finding ourselves reflecting on 2016 and thinking about how to make 2017 better. Maybe you hated 2016 or maybe 2016 was an awesome year for you? Regardless if you had a great 2016 and now find yourself in your best spot yet, there’s still always room for improvement.
As followers of Christ, we always need to be willing to allow God to transform us into the people that He wants us to become. Romans 12:1-2NLT says, “And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” Acts 1:19 refers to Apostle Paul as a “chosen vessel.” On the day of our Salvation by Jesus Christ, we became vessels of the Holy Spirit, who came to dwell in us as our comforter and guide. As His vessels, God will continually transform us, as long as we are willing to allow God to use us. As we approach 2017, what are some ways we can become better vessels for Jesus Christ? Perhaps, we could strive to read the Bible and pray more to enrich our spiritual lives and draw closer to the Lord? Maybe we need to be more open with our faith and share God’s Word with more people? We could resolve to live holier lives, that are more set apart for God? We could resolve to spend more of our physical energies in service work to those in need? We could resolve to become better stewards of our vessels (bodies) by eating healthier and exercising more? After all, we need our bodies (vessels) to do God’s work. May we take this time to consider all of the ways we can become better vessels for Jesus Christ in 2017.

“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”  -Philippians 1:6 NLT

Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for all of the wonderful blessings, that You have bestowed upon us in 2016. As 2017 approaches, please give us hearts and minds that are willing to follow Your lead. Please continue to transform us and make us in the people You want us to become. Please help us to use 2017 to not only please You, but to bring you glory with our lives. Also, Lord Jesus please fill 2017 with Your amazing love, joy, peace, guidance, wisdom, protection, and blessings. Amen.

Chosen?

“If God is pleased with me, why I am I so terrified?”

Have you ever been chosen to do something, that seemed impossible? You know that you have been living your life to please God in every way. Yet, this circumstance seems unplanned and difficult, even if it is something good.  How did you feel? Perhaps, you felt uncertain or even “terrified”?

“The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[a] the Son of God.” 

-Luke 1:28-35 NIV

The song, Be Born In Me by Francesca Battistelli, expresses some the emotions Mary may have felt, when she found out she would be the mother of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Can you even imagine how she felt? Luke 1: 29 says, “she was greatly troubled.” Initially, she must have felt terrified to see an angel appear and speak to her. The angel told her things, that seemed impossible. She must have also felt frightened. She must have thought about the severe punishment of those days for a woman who conceived a child without being married. Here she was: a girl engaged to be married. And, now all of these plans might change. But, at the same time she must have felt beyond honored and incredibly blessed to be chosen to be the mother the Son of God. At the same time, imagine the great responsibility she must have felt.  In Luke 1:46-50 NIV, “… Mary said, “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed,for the Mighty One has done great things for me holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. “ – Luke 1:46-50 NIV

She must have wondered why God would choose her of all of the other women in the world. In a similar way, we wonder why God would choose to love us. We don’t deserve  His great love. Yet, God sent a King, His only Son, Jesus Christ to earth to pay the ransom for our sins, so that we could spend eternity with Him in heaven. And, all that God ask of us are willing hearts. Will you let the love of Jesus Christ be born in you?

Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for loving us (while we were still sinners) so much that you were willing to humble Yourself by coming down from your throne in heaven to be born in a stable and to make the ultimate sacrifice for us. Please give us willing hearts. Make our hearts Your Bethlehem. May your love be born in us. Amen.

 

Are you worrying about something?

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

-Matthew 6:34 NIV

It seems almost impossible not to worry. There is so much that consumes our minds on a daily basis and even hourly basis. Worse yet, all of this worry tends to affect us on a deeper level: impacting us emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, socially, and physically. This makes us poor stewards of what God has given us. How can we ask for more if don’t take care of what we have? If we can’t trust God with little, then we will most certainly  have a harder time trusting God with much. Yet, the thought of being out of control (when it comes to most of the things that happen all around us) can be incredibly daunting and even frustrating for us mere humans. But, God didn’t intend for it to be that way for His children. Peter 5:7 says, “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” We don’t have to worry about anything. The song, Sparrows by Jason Grey reminds us, “if He can hold the world He can hold this moment….even the sparrow knows He holds tomorrow.” Matthew 10:29-30 says,“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.  And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.  So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”  Think about the lyrics to the song, Sparrows by Jason Gray:

You can’t change a single thing by freaking out
It’s just gonna close you in
Oh don’t let the trouble win

Dear Lord Jesus, please help us to put all our trust in You, knowing that whatever happens is for our good, according to Your purpose and plans. Amen.

 

El árbol sin hojas

Humillaos delante del Señor, y él os exaltará.

 “El árbol estaba desabrigado. Cada hoja había sido derramada. Había llegado el invierno. Sin embargo, más allá del árbol estéril, el sol asomó su cabeza por encima de las copas de los árboles. Fue rompiendo el amanecer. Como el sol subió más alto, sus rayos eran visibles a través de las ramas desabrigadas. En poco tiempo, todo el árbol brillaba como el resplandor del sol brillado a través de él.”(Nortker, 3-Minute Devotionals For Women, p. 91)

¿Qué es humildad? La humildad es uno de los conceptos más incomprendidos. Hay una cita de C.S. Lewis que describe bastante bien la humildad: “verdadera humildad es no pensar menos de ti mismo; es pensar en ti mismo menos. ” Cuando pensamos en eso, tenemos que plantearnos la siguiente pregunta: Cuánto tiempo pasamos pensando en nosotros mismos (nuestras necesidades, nuestros deseos, nuestra felicidad, nuestros sueños, nuestras metas, nuestros planes, nuestras finanzas, nuestras cosas). La mayoría de nosotros se darían cuenta que pasamos más tiempo pensando en nosotros mismos que en Dios o’ otros. Pero, si nos pasamos menos tiempo pensando acerca de nuestros problemas, deseos, necesidades; ¿cómo serían diferentes nuestras vidas? ¿Tal vez nos sería menos estresados con nuestras propias vidas y serían una bendición más grande en la vida de los demás? El autor del extracto anterior describe un árbol, que no tiene hojas ni flores. Se ha despojado de todo lo que podría darle belleza física, poder, o gloria. De la misma manera, tenemos que ser capaces de dejar que Dios nos despoja de nuestros deseos y nuestros visiones de prepotencia. Tenemos que humillarnos ante el Señor y ofrecerle todo lo que tenemos y queremos. Así, Dios puede tomar otras actitudes impías y el orgullo de nosotros. Si lo hacemos, nosotros no seremos obstaculizados por nuestra propia voluntad egoísta y Dios puede cumplir su propósito final y completa por nuestras vidas. ¿Qué pasaría si la voluntad de Dios y los planes de Dios llegara hacer nuestra voluntad y nuestros planes? Cuando el árbol tenía menos de sí mismo, la gloria del sol (el Hijo de Dios) podría brillar a través de él para revelar lo que es una vista más gloriosa que si habría conservado obstinadamente sus hojas. Tenemos que ser como el árbol. Tenemos que disminuir, para que Dios pueda aumentar (“Es necesario que él crezca, y que yo mengüe” -Juan 3:30 RVR (1977)) y Su gloria puede brillar a través de nosotros y nuestras insuficiencias. Amen.

Entonces Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: Si alguno quiere venir en pos de mí, niéguese a sí mismo, y tome su cruz, y sígame.”-Mateo 16:24 RVR (1960)

Suficiente luz para hoy

Lámpara es a mis pies tu palabra,
    Y lumbrera a mi camino.” 

 -Salmos 119:105 RVR1960

A veces quedamos perdidos en el camino. Perdemos de vista de la luz real. ¿Tal vez quedamos distraídos con las luciérnagas o los sonidos de la noche? Terminamos caminando sin la luz verdadera. Entonces, empezamos a tropezad en la oscuridad. Incluso podemos caer y chocar contra los que nos rodea; perjudicando no sólo a nosotros mismos, sino también los quien nos rodean. Cualquier persona (incluso gente “fuerte”) puede caer, si perdien el enfoque del camino adelante de ellos y no pueden ver donde caminan. Al leer el versículo anterior, sabemos que la única y verdadera luz para nuestro camino es la Palabra de Dios. Si fallamos en leer su Palabra diariamente, no tenemos la luz que necesitamos para cada día. Estamos seguros de caer y perder nuestro camino a lo largo de la ruta. Sin embargo, no podemos esperar a ver más lejos que hoy. Dios sólo nos da suficiente luz para cada día. Él no permite que la luz brille más allá de las barreras de hoy. ¿Porqué? Porque él no quiere que nosotros seamos abrumados por lo que está adelante. ¿Porqué deberíamos estar preocupados por mañana? Dios ya sabe lo que está ahí y esta preparando el camino para nosotros. Pero tenemos que asegurarnos que tenemos apenas suficiente luz para los pasos de hoy.

Querido Señor Jesúcristo, por favor ayúdanos a mantener nuestros ojos enfocados en usted y su palabra. Y por favor ayúdanos comprometernos a leer su palabra y comunicar con usted diariamente. Amén.

 

 

 

 

Did you already build your house?

“being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;”

 -Philippians 1:6 NKJV

On the day of our salvation, God started a “good work” on each of us. Of course we aren’t immediately made like Christ. Instead it is a gradual process, that happens everyday. It’s not an easy process. Sometimes it hurts. Oftentimes, we have to be broken from the inside out, to be rebuilt again. And, we don’t always understand what God is doing, but He always has a plan. James 1:2-4 NIV says,  “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds,  because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” We must be willing to allow God to remove and add to us. But, most importantly we must be patient and not give up.

“Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of – throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.”  – C.S.Lewis

Have you planned out your life and what you want to be like? Did you already decide on all of the details of your future?  Proverbs 19:21 says, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” We may have plans, but God has bigger plans. His understanding and wisdom is infinite. Isaiah 55:9 reminds us that God’s ways are higher than our ways. It says, “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” We can’t just give up, because things don’t seem to be going our way. We need to trust God to not only mold us, but lead us to where He wants to take us. Hebrews 10:36 NIV says, “You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.” Are you willing to allow God to mold you and change you from the inside out? Are you willing to exchange your plans for God’s plans? We may not understand what God is doing with us or our lives, but if we trust Him and cooperate, He will transform us and our lives into something better than we could ever imagine.

Dear Lord Jesus, please give us hearts that are willing to submit to Your alterations and the patience we need to wait for Your guidance. Please help us to trust You, when we don’t understand, what You are doing with our lives. Please help us to remember Your plans are always the best. Amen.
