2. Go to the Christmas tree lot and buy a tree
3. Put up the Christmas tree and Christmas decorations
4. Put up the outdoor Christmas lights
5. Shop for Christmas gifts
6. Shop for Christmas gift wrap
7. Wrap Christmas gifts
8. Pay the bills
9. Gather toys for the toy drive
10. Get a haircut
11. Shop for food for the Christmas festivities
12. Shop for an outfit to wear to the Christmas party
13. Find recipes for Christmas cookies
14. Write the Christmas blog
15. Practice piano for the Christmas special
16. Gather clothes for Christmas donations
17. Give the dog a bath
18. Wash the car
19. Vacuum and dust the guest room
20. Cook food for the Christmas festivities
21. Wash and prepare bedding for the Christmas guests

Does this to-do list sound anything like your to-do list?  

“In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.  (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.)  And everyone went to their own town to register.  So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.  He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.  While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.”

Perhaps you are asking yourself: “How does this scripture relate to my busy Christmas to-do list?” To answer this question I will direct your focus to one of the background characters of this story, the Innkeeper. Here are the lyrics to a song called Rest (The Song of the Innkeeper) by Jason Gray.

But at least they won’t be wandering
If they’re sleeping on my stable floor

Do you feel like the innkeeper? Do you feel “overbooked and overrun” this Christmas season? Do you feel overwhelmed? Matthew 11:28-30 NIV says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for coming down from heaven to earth to make the ultimate sacrifice for us on Calvary so that we might have the everlasting gift of Salvation in You. Please help us not to become so overwhelmed with things to do this Christmas that we lose sight of the meaning of Christmas. Please help us to find our rest in You this Christmas. Amen.
